Are You a Good Candidate for Dentures?
Dentures are designed to replace all or just a portion of your teeth. A dental bridge is appropriate if you have only lost one or a few teeth. A dental bridge is an artificial tooth (or teeth) that is bonded between multiple teeth. With full dentures, all of the teeth are removed and replaced by the denture. Partial dentures are like full dentures in that they do not require all your teeth to be removed or extracted. A partial denture may not be appropriate if you miss a few teeth on only one side. It may be uncomfortable and may be difficult for you to adjust to. It might also be difficult to effectively bite down if you have tight, occlusive teeth. Implants or a bridge would be preferable to partial denture in this circumstance.
People of any age who have lost some, or all, of their natural teeth, or whose teeth are too damaged or decayed to be fixed, are ideal candidates for dentures. Very few patients cannot wear dentures. The only major issue for denture candidates is the condition of their jawbone. Traditional dentures are made to fit the contours of the jaw and ridge. Dentures will no longer fit properly if the jaw and ridge has flattened out.
Here are a few reasons why you might not be a good fit for dentures:
- The amount of bone remaining in your jaw may have a significant impact on your denture comfort. If the dentures have nothing to sit on, it is difficult for them to be stable or to form a suction seal. This causes the dentures to become loose and unstable, making it difficult to chew with dentures.
- For partial dentures to work, they must extend from one side to the other side of the mouth. Other teeth are also necessary for the stability of partial dentures. A partial denture might not be the best option if you are missing a few teeth on just one side. It might not feel good to you and be quite difficult to adjust to. A person may have difficulty correctly biting down if their teeth are crowded or tight.
- Gagging sensitivity is frequently an immediate response. Dentures may not be the ideal option for those who are unable to overcome this obstacle. Traditional dentures can become loose over time as the ridge shrinks, and they can provoke the gag reflex. For someone who is extremely sensitive to gagging, dentures placed over implants would be the best option.
